Hi, I'm Thomas Underhill

I think and build big. I invented a novel and patented mechanism for improving data security and integrity, which Oracle now owns. I built two different artificial intelligence startups in 2018 and 2023, the latter of which built a patent generation engine and a general purpose legal assistant. I was a Technical Product Leader at HashiCorp, VMware, and F5 NGINX. I've been an engineering leader at Amazon, Oracle Cloud, and various startups. I was also an architect at PayPal and eBay building cloud services before they were commonplace. I've singlehandedly built multiple analytics systems at Amazon and created tooling with Amazon Bedrock to process and understand millions of customer trouble tickets. All of my Amazon work supported the launch of new AWS regions, which contribute billions of dollars in revenue.Earlier in my career, I pioneered cloud concepts, creating web services that replaced monolithic systems at PayPal and eBay. I've led product for a core Internet technology stack (NGINX), VMware's Kubernetes and modern applications business, HashiCorp, and numerous startups.

I seek out opportunities that combine my technical expertise with my passion for building big ideas. I thrive at funded startups. I'm scrappy, hands-on, think big, and have a bias for action. At this stage of my career, I have no interest in unfunded startups or serving in unpaid technical cofounder roles. I have worked in office, hybrid, and remote roles - each have advantages and disadvantages...I adapt. When I'm not inventing, building, or coding, you can find me exploring new places in my RV, traveling to far-flung lands, trying my hand at a new recipe, doing outdoors activities with my wife, or playing with my dog.
